Muhammad Hammajoda started his career as a teacher at the Federal Polytechnic in Mubi, Adamawa State. He also gained experience working with the former Allied Bank and Standard Trust Bank. Before his current appointment, he served as the Director of Accounts at the EFCC.
President Bola Tinubu has chosen Muhammad Hassan Hammajoda to be the Secretary of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Senate confirms Olukoyede as EFCC chairman, Hammajoda as secretary
The Senate has officially approved Ola Olukoyede as the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). They have also confirmed the appointment of Muhammad Hammajoda as the secretary of the anti-graft agency.
Mr. Olukoyede’s nomination by President Bola Tinubu was confirmed, despite some controversy regarding his qualification for the position. Some Nigerians argued that he didn’t meet the requirements outlined in the Act that established the anti-corruption agency.
According to Section 2(3) of the EFCC Act, the chairman of the commission should be a serving or retired member of any government security or law enforcement agency, not below the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police or an equivalent rank, and should have at least 15 years of experience. It was reported that Mr. Olukoyede did not meet these specific requirements as per the Act.
However, the Presidency maintained that the 54-year-old, who hails from Ekiti State, was indeed qualified for the position.
Confirmation
The Senate, responsible for enforcing laws, did not adhere to the requirements of the EFCC Act for the position of chairman.
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, declared the confirmation of Mr. Olukoyede and Mr. Hammajoda after a voice vote by the senators during the plenary session.
President Tinubu’s request for the confirmation of Mr. Olukoyede as Chairman and Mr. Hammajoda as Secretary of EFCC was presented by the Senate President during the plenary on Tuesday. It was subsequently referred to the Committee of the Whole for evaluation.
The two nominees underwent screening and were approved by the senators in the Committee of the Whole, where they answered questions about their strategies for curbing corruption in the country.
