Busisiwe Mavuso, a 46-year-old South African businesswoman, currently serves as the CEO of Business Leadership South Africa. Prior to her role as CEO of BLSA, she held the position of CEO at the Black Management Forum from 2016 to 2017 before taking on her current role in July 2019.
Busisiwe Mavuso faced a challenging upbringing, and she had to work at a bank to cover her school expenses. The poorly supported educational system for nonwhite individuals in South Africa resulted in her taking nine years to earn her accounting degree.
Early Life
Busisiwe Mavuso was born around 1977 or 1978 in Soweto, specifically in the White City neighborhood of Jabavu. She grew up in a family with three siblings, all raised by their mother, who was a teacher and a widow until her passing in 2012. At the age of 16 in 1994, Mavuso successfully completed her secondary education at Lofentse Girls School in Orlando East.
Despite her family’s challenging circumstances, Busisiwe Mavuso had to enter the workforce immediately after completing her secondary education. However, she also took on part-time studies at the University of South Africa, with the goal of becoming a chartered accountant. She eventually earned her Bachelor’s degree in accounting after several years and later completed a Master’s degree in business leadership at the same university. In 2018, she achieved membership in the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.

In 1995, Busisiwe Mavuso embarked on her career in the banking sector, starting with an internship at Allied Bank. She later went on to work for various consulting, telecommunications, and healthcare companies.
In 2009, she assumed the role of Chief Financial Officer at the Black Management Forum, where she spent eight years, eventually ascending to the position of Managing Director. When she took on the role of Managing Director in 2016, she expressed strong support for strict and punitive enforcement of transformation targets within South African businesses.
In November 2017, Mavuso was appointed as the Chief Operating Officer of Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA), working under her mentor, Bonang Mohale, who had recently become the CEO of BLSA. On July 1, 2019, she succeeded Mohale as the CEO of BLSA.
Concurrently, from 2018 to 2022, Busisiwe Mavuso served on the board of Eskom, taking her seat in January 2018 when the board was chaired by Jabu Mabuza. In April 2022, she gained national attention for leaving a meeting between the board and Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts. During the meeting, Mavuso stated that the board and André de Ruyter would not accept being made “the fall guy for this ANC-led government” and its “mess,” referring to the ongoing energy crisis.
The Committee chairperson, Mkhuleko Hlengwa, told Mavuso to “either behave yourself or excuse yourself from this meeting,” and she promptly excused herself. The Ministry of Public Enterprises criticized her behavior as “unbecoming,” but Mavuso maintained that she had no obligation to “behave and be pliable to Parliament.” She resigned from the Eskom board in September 2022.
