John Inyang Okoro, a well-known and wealthy judge, was born on July 7, 1959, in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. John Inyang Okoro is a Nigerian legal expert and serves as a Justice in the Supreme Court of Nigeria. His appointment as a Supreme Court Justice was confirmed by the Senate in October 2013, and he was officially sworn in on November 15, 2014, by Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar, the former Chief Justice of Nigeria.

In a notable turn of events, he was detained by the Department of State Security Services (DSS) on October 8, 2016, on allegations of bribery and corruption. However, subsequent investigations led to his exoneration, and he was reinstated as a Supreme Court judge. It’s worth noting that he was fully cleared by the DSS in December 2019 and was never brought to trial for the charges he initially faced.

John Inyang Okoro went to Methodist School, Nung Ukim, from 1965 to 1972. Then, he attended Boys High School, Oron, from 1973 to 1977, followed by the School of Arts & Science in Uyo from 1979 to 1981. His university education took place at the University of Lagos from 1981 to 1984. Subsequently, he completed his legal training at the Nigerian Law School in Lagos and officially became a lawyer in 1985.

Hon. Justice John Inyang Okoro began his legal career as a Magistrate Grade 11 in 1986. He steadily progressed through the Magisterial Cadre and eventually reached the position of Chief Magistrate Grade 1 in 1996. Following this, he served as a Judge of the High Court of Akwa Ibom State from 1998 to 2006. In 2006, he was promoted to the Court of Appeal, where he continued his service until 2013.

Throughout his career, he held various roles, including being a member of the Election Petition Tribunal in Kano in 1998, serving on the Governorship and Legislative Houses Election Petition Tribunal in Ondo State in 2003, and also being a member of Governorship and Legislative Houses Election Petition Tribunal No. 2 in Delta State in 2003. He actively participated in numerous seminars, workshops, and conferences, both nationally and internationally.

Hon. Justice John Inyang Okoro’s illustrious journey led to his elevation to the Supreme Court on November 15, 2013.
