There might be a new PlayStation handheld in the works that can play both PS4 and PS5 games on the go. The information comes from the YouTube channel Moore’s Law Is Dead, known for previously revealing details about a PS5 Pro console. Sony recently launched the PlayStation Portal, but it can only stream games directly from the PS5. The new handheld would be a standalone device, not tied to a separate console, similar to a Steam Deck.
Reportedly, Sony has given AMD, the computer chip maker, the green light to start active development on the device. However, it’s still in the early stages, and there’s a possibility it might not be released. AMD already manufactures the GPU that powers the PS5, capable of 4K visuals at 120 frames per second.
The handheld may not match the PS5’s performance to preserve battery life and avoid a high price tag. The speculated specs suggest it could be similar to the PS4, with 18 compute units in its GPU and a clock speed of 1.8 GHz. This would mean it can play PS4 games natively, while PS5 games might need a software update.
As for a release date, it might be at least two years away, unless Sony decides to launch it alongside the PS6 as a handheld alternative for the Japanese market. The 12-year gap between the PS Vita and PS Portal hinted at Sony’s hesitation to release another handheld. However, the success of the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck may have influenced Sony to give proper handhelds another chance, possibly by avoiding past mistakes and offering a system that doesn’t require separate game purchases. It’s essential to take this information as a rumor until Sony officially confirms it.
